Is BPSS The Same As DBS? Everyone Must Know Differences!

Any concern in employment screening leads to chaos in recruitment. Therefore, it is important to keep everything clear and comprehensible so the right candidate can join your organization. For making employment more effective, you need to collect all essential details including BPSS screening. As a quick recap, BPSS is a baseline personnel security standard and applies for pre-employment screening. BPSS check allows employers to get the complete background information of a candidate before hiring him/her in their organizations. Now, what about DBS? How it differs from BPSS?

What is DBS?

DBS is the disclosure and barring service necessary for employers to have safer recruitment operations. Every year the UK government issues DBS check for Wales, the Channel Islands, England, and the Isle of Man. DBS makes sure that the right applicant will get selected in private, public, and voluntary areas. Under the Protection of Freedoms Act 2012, it was created in 2012 after the merger of the Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) and the Independent Safeguarding Authority (ISA). Companies let candidates clear DBS before recruiting to them.

DBS screening discloses the criminal record of an individual. The ultimate goal of this screening is to save vulnerable groups from unsuitable people. It includes four stages while checking the criminal history of any person:

  • Basic check: It is applicable to know unspent convictions and conditional cautions of an individual as per the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974.
  • Standard check: It digs out the information about spent and unspent convictions, reprimands, cautions, and final warnings
  • Enhanced check: This check is an advanced form of standard check in which information provided by local police is also considered.
  • Enhanced + barred list checks: Once enhanced check is done, the same person is checked on the barred lists if he or she comes under an adult’s barred list or children’s barred list, or both.

How Both BPSS Screening And DBS Check Are Different?

As we know, BPSS is a pre-employment screening process in which candidates’ identity verification, employment history, criminal records, and nationality are evaluated. It helps in maintaining national security. If you are willing to work with the UK government (either permanently or temporarily), you have to go through BPSS screening. There are four personal security standards for employment screening: BPSS, Security Check (SC), Counter-Terrorist Check (CTC), and Developed Vetting (DV).

Furthermore, there is a huge difference between DBS and BPSS screening. We can say that BPSS may include a DBS check while screening any candidate’s eligibility for any job requirement. When you want to join any organization, you may need to show a DBS check or BPSS check. BPSS shares your eligibility in terms of employment records, criminal history, and identity whereas a DBS check makes sure that you are safe for vulnerable adults as well as children if you contact them. For that, you have to pass the programmed procedure and show your eligibility.
